about

"Quarantine of the Heart" was written close to one year ago, on April 23rd 2020. Seattle was about a month into the first "stay at home" order and news footage of families and loved ones separated by the illness still raw. Streets were empty and an eerie, low-level mood of fear and uncertainty pervaded everything.

I believe over the course of the pandemic everyone has had at least one moment of lying awake in bed in the middle of the night and feel a tickle in the back of your throat, or a heaviness in your chest, or a mild fever, and think, "Is this how it starts? Do I have COVID? Will I be one of the unlucky ones?"

That night in April of last year was that moment for me. Freaked me right out. So I did what a songwriter is supposed to do. I got up and turned it into a song.

My aim is to capture and humanize the ongoing suffering that has largely gone unseen by most of us. Provide a tiny glimpse into the countless tragedies playing out daily.

It took far longer to bring to life than I'd anticipated as working through the complexities of recording during the pandemic was a real struggle and it ultimately ended up taking 7 months to complete.

lyrics

Lyrics:

Longing to feel your embrace
Counting the days until I touch your face
Though this fever keeps us apart
I swear to you we both will survive
The quarantine of the heart

The heat of your fingertips radiates
Into my skin through the glass that separates
There's a thief that steals my breath
I never quite seem to catch, to break
The quarantine of the heart

How far, how far, how far you fade from me
This crown conquers all in the end it seems

Is this a fevered dream from which I wake?
Is this breath in this world or the next that I take?
I feel your body laying next to mine
The truth of it shattering
The quarantine of the heart
